Nero is a two-year-old lion living with his family in the African jungle until hunters shoot and trap him. Shipped to a circus, he meets Tum Tum the elephant, learns tricks from his trainer, frightens a boy, escapes and wanders the countryside, where he falls in with a tramp. Each short chapter is told directly to a young listener.
