In the days of periwigs, a poor old tailor in Westgate Street is cutting a cherry-coloured coat for the Mayor of Gloucester, who is to be married on Christmas morning. Short of a single skein of cherry-coloured twist and laid low by fever, he must rely on his cat Simpkin, who is sulking because his master set free the mice he had trapped under teacups.
