Perils and Captivity collects several dramatic narratives of disaster and survival, translated into English from French sources. The centerpiece is the sufferings of the Picard family after the shipwreck of the Medusa in 1816, the same catastrophe that inspired Géricault’s famous painting, told here through the recollections of Charlotte-Adélaïde Dard.
The volume also includes the captivity of M. de Brisson in 1785 and the voyage of Madame Godin along the Amazon in 1770, two further tales of ordeal in distant and hostile lands. Together these accounts offer harrowing eyewitness testimony of shipwreck, enslavement, and endurance against the elements. As a collection of early survival narratives, the book is a compelling historical read, presented here as a free EPUB download.
