Rostand followed Cyrano with this six-act verse tragedy about the Duke of Reichstadt, Napoleon’s son, kept a gilded prisoner at Schönbrunn and dying at twenty-one of the weight of his father’s name. Sarah Bernhardt played the boy in Paris and Maude Adams in New York.
