Along an old Roman road between the Marne and the Meuse, a French soldier who has thrown away his rifle trudges through the night, a man in flight. At a forest spring he meets a strange young woman, and through a confession, a dream and a penance he must decide whether one man’s part in the defence of France still matters.
A short, moving wartime parable from the American minister and diplomat, written in 1919. Download the free EPUB.
