The missionary scholar James Scarth Gale translated these stories from an old manuscript of Im Bang and a reprint of Yi Ryuk’s tales. They are about seers, wizards, fox spirits and the dead, and about visits to the palaces of the other world. Gale presents them as a window on the Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian beliefs that shaped Korean life.
