Richard Meynell, rector of a Midland parish, leads a movement of clergy who want to reform the Church of England’s creeds from within, and his stand brings him to trial before the church courts. Around the controversy runs a love story with Mary Elsmere, daughter of the hero of Robert Elsmere, and an old village secret that threatens to come out.
