At Merlwood, a country house, rival cousins are drawn to Hester Maule and Annot Drummond, while debts, drink and an unwise attachment lead one young officer to play with fire. The story then follows the regiments to the Soudan campaign of the 1880s, where the desert tests courage and loyalty alike.
