Yonge sets herself the challenge of retelling the Hercules myth in a Victorian setting. Harold, a big, impulsive young heir to the Arghouse inheritance, meets modern versions of the twelve labours, from the Lion of Neme Heath to the Dragon’s Head inn, as a narrator in the family records his struggles, temptations and growing strength of character.
