Hugh Sutherland, a young tutor in an Aberdeenshire laird’s house, finds his real teacher in the estate’s ploughman David Elginbrod, a man of simple faith and deep wisdom, and in his daughter Margaret. When Hugh moves south to a new post in England, he meets a household falling under the spell of the mesmerist Count Funkelstein.
