As schoolchildren, Matey Weyburn and Aminta Farrell, nicknamed Browny, adored each other from afar. Years later Aminta is the unacknowledged wife of the brilliant, embittered old general Lord Ormont, and Weyburn becomes his secretary. The novel follows the slow growth of their love against the pressures of society and an imperious husband.
