Hester Raymount, eldest daughter of a prosperous family, longs to do real good in the world while her brother Cornelius drifts into idleness and debt and the fashionable Mr. Vavasor courts her. From a windswept English coast to the poor streets of London, MacDonald tests each member of the household against the demands of conscience and love.
One of MacDonald’s moral novels of contemporary life, for readers who know him through Phantastes and want the realist side. Download the free EPUB.
