Alice Vavasor is engaged to John Grey, a decent, quiet man, and cannot bring herself to marry him. She breaks with him and drifts back toward her cousin George, a wild and ambitious man bent on Parliament. Alongside her story run Lady Glencora’s temptation by her old love Burgo Fitzgerald and the comic courtship of the widowed Mrs. Greenow.
