Walter Egremont, a wealthy young idealist, sets out to bring culture to the working men of Lambeth through a library and lectures. Among his hearers is the bookish Gilbert Grail, who loves Thyrza Trent, a beautiful working girl who sings like an angel, and Egremont’s interest in her threatens every life it touches.
