David Faux, a yeoman’s son with a taste for sugared almonds and a grand opinion of himself, robs his mother of her savings and sails for the West Indies. Years later he returns to the market town of Grimworth under another name, opens a fine sweet shop and courts a well-off bride, until his brother Jacob, a simple man with a great love of lozenges, appears.
A sly, comic novella that shows George Eliot in an unusually satirical mood. Download the free EPUB.
