In 1880 the Norwegian naturalist set out for Australia to collect animals for the University of Christiania’s museums and to study little-known native tribes. After time in the south-eastern colonies he went north into Queensland, where he lived and hunted alongside Aboriginal men, recording tree-kangaroos and other wildlife together with customs, beliefs and the hard frontier relations between settlers and the original inhabitants.
A valuable early ethnographic record, though its title and its racial attitudes are those of the 1880s. Download the free EPUB.
