Sailing from Sydney in 1827, the English artist Augustus Earle landed at Hokianga and travelled overland to the Bay of Islands, where he lived among Māori communities and met the chief Patuone. He describes villages, carving and tattooing, warfare and feasting, the forest tracks, the traders and the missionary settlement at Kerikeri, with an outsider’s attitudes typical of his time.
A vivid early eyewitness account of New Zealand by the painter who later sailed on the Beagle. Download the free EPUB.
