Henson made eight Arctic voyages with Peary, spoke Inuktitut better than any other member of the expeditions, drove the dogs and was at the front of the final sledge party. His own account — of the ice, the Inuit companions whose skill made it possible, and his position in the party — was published in 1912 and then largely ignored for fifty years.
