Frank Marryat, son of the novelist Captain Marryat, sailed as a midshipman in HMS Samarang on her surveying voyage among the islands of the East Indies in the 1840s. He sketched native costumes and scenery wherever the ship called, and his narrative covers Borneo and Sarawak, the Philippines and the Malay seas, including a tense confrontation with a sultan and fights with pirates.
A vivid young officer’s view of Southeast Asia in the age of sail, written with the imperial assumptions of its time. Download the free EPUB.
