In 1828 W. E. Cormack reported to the Boeothick Institution at St. John’s on his expedition into the interior of Newfoundland to find the surviving Beothuk, the island’s Red Indians. He found only their abandoned camps, burial places and traces, and recounts how settlers had captured a Beothuk woman and killed her husband as he tried to save her.
