In the year after Appomattox, the Ohio journalist Whitelaw Reid travelled the coasts and rivers of the former Confederacy, part of the way with Chief Justice Chase. He reports on freedmen’s schools, ruined cities, cotton and sugar planters adjusting to free labour, Union sentiment and bitterness, and the mood of white and Black Southerners, with the racial language of 1866.
