In September 1850 Thoreau took a cheap excursion train from Concord to Montreal and Quebec, and came back, he says, with a cold. His wry account of walls, soldiers, Catholic churches and the St. Lawrence fills the first half. The rest gathers his reform writings: Slavery in Massachusetts, Civil Disobedience, A Plea for Captain John Brown and Life Without Principle.
A compact gathering of Thoreau the traveller and Thoreau the conscience of New England. Download the free EPUB.
