In 1904 and 1905, on assignment for Harper’s Monthly, the journalist Henry Nevinson walked the old slave route through Portuguese Angola and then crossed to the cocoa plantations of São Tomé and Príncipe. He found that ‘contract labourers’ were bought, marched to the coast and shipped to the islands, never to return, and he set down the plantations, the agents, the missions and the dead along the trail.

A pioneering piece of investigative journalism that exposed slave-grown cocoa to British and American readers. Download the free EPUB.
