Old barons spin yarns, a Turkish sultan delivers judgement, a chronicle recalls the sheriff of Caschau, and a little dog meddles in a romance in this selection of Hungarian short fiction. The longest piece, “The Red Starosta”, runs to several chapters. R. Nisbet Bain, translator of many of Jókai’s novels, adds a full biography of the author.
