In the title story, twenty-six men sweat in a cellar bakery and pin all their hope on a single girl who visits them each morning. Alongside it come Gorky’s tales of vagabonds and outcasts, including the smuggler Tchelkache and the peasant boy Gavrilo on a dangerous night crossing, introduced by a preface on the tramp who burst into Russian literature.
