During the Mexican War, the unscrupulous Captain Spike sails his fast brigantine from New York toward the Gulf, carrying powder for the enemy and the young Rose Budd and her aunt as passengers. His honest mate Harry Mulford and the odd little steward Jack Tier stand in his way, and the struggle plays out among the shoals and keys of the Florida Reef.
