When Dom Manuel, Redeemer of Poictesme, vanishes, the knights of his Fellowship of the Silver Stallion disperse on separate adventures, while at home a legend of a holy saviour grows around a man they knew to be shrewd and human. Cabell follows each lord through wizards, gods, temptations and misadventures, building an ironic fable about how religions are made.
