A sealing captain, convinced by John Cleves Symmes’s theory of a hollow earth, sails south and passes through the polar opening into an interior world. There he finds Symzonia, a land of pale, virtuous people governed by a council of the Best Man drawn from the Good, the Useful and the Wise, whose judgement of the outer world is not flattering.
