A Cincinnati scholar is visited by a mysterious white-bearded stranger who forces him to read a manuscript: the confession of a man kidnapped by a secret brotherhood after dabbling in alchemy, then led underground by a sightless guide into a world beneath Kentucky. The descent mixes adventure with long debates on science, gravity, intoxicants and the limits of knowledge.
A strange cult classic by a pharmacist-chemist, as famous for its uncanny illustrations as for its ideas. Download the free EPUB.
