Pomander Walk is a row of small houses by the Thames near Chiswick, home to retired Admiral Sir Peter Antrobus, the pompous Jerome Brooke-Hoskyn and their neighbours. When a mysterious lady and her daughter Marjolaine take Number Four, old loves and young ones stir, and the whole Walk becomes involved in bringing a pair of hesitant lovers together.
