Phoebe Lyddon, the miller’s daughter at Chagford, loves the impulsive young Will Blanchard, but her father wants someone steadier. Their secret romance, a brothers’ quarrel, a spell outside Exeter Gaol and Will’s struggles to make a farm pay on the high moor at Newtake unfold among the granite tors, rivers and gossiping villagers of Dartmoor, rendered in rich local dialect.
