Benita Clifford survives the wreck of the Zanzibar off the African coast and joins her father on the high plateau, where a legend tells of gold hidden by Portuguese fugitives centuries ago in the ruined stronghold of Bambatse. Their partner, the ruthless Jacob Meyer, believes that Benita, in a mesmeric trance, can lead them to the treasure.
