Renan wrote much of his Vie de Jésus in Galilee with the landscape in front of him, and set out to tell the story as a historian would tell any other: a Galilean preacher of extraordinary charm and moral genius, and no miracles. The book cost him his chair at the Collège de France and sold in enormous numbers.
