Davidson wrote this survey for the Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1875, saw it cut against his wishes, and published it whole. It traces the Old Testament canon from its beginnings, the Samaritan and Alexandrian collections, the New Testament through the first centuries and the Reformation, and the canon as each church’s confession defines it.
A clear account of nineteenth-century critical scholarship for readers curious how the Bible became a single book. Download the free EPUB.
