William Miller, a farmer of Low Hampton, New York, came to believe from his study of Bible prophecy that Christ would return around 1843, and his lectures launched a movement of tens of thousands. Drawing on Sylvester Bliss’s memoir, James White, a founder of the Seventh-day Adventists, tells Miller’s life, his preaching and the disappointment of 1844 from a sympathetic standpoint.
