Starting from Matthew Arnold’s remark that few love poetry but nearly everyone loves dogs, Clauson gathers poems on the subject in four parts: puppyhood, the bond between dog and owner, dogs in action, and the dog’s hereafter. Famous poets appear beside newspaper versifiers, in tributes, elegies and pleas against cruelty.
