Delivered in Latin at Oxford and here in their 1742 English translation, these lectures treat the nature and origin of poetry, its style and its beauty of thought, then move through the kinds of poem, from pastoral to epic. Examples from Virgil and Homer are quoted throughout, with the translator’s notes.
An Augustan account of how poetry should work, valuable for students of eighteenth-century criticism. Download the free EPUB.
