He Meditates on the Critic

“Criticism is a tonic,
Very healthy in effect,”
Wrote he, and my verse Byronic
Did most ruthlessly reject.

He’s a villain—deep—politic—
Bitter things these tonics, all,
Manufactured by the critic
From his mighty store of gall.
