In colonial Massachusetts, the witch Goody Rickby and her familiar Dickon, the devil, make a scarecrow, breathe life into it and send it as Lord Ravensbane to woo Rachel, the niece of Justice Merton, in revenge for an old wrong. Only a magic mirror, the glass of truth, shows what the elegant suitor really is. MacKaye builds on Hawthorne’s Feathertop.
