A starving playwright in a tenement attic writes a melodrama to pay the rent, and the audience watches both at once: the real play in front of a net curtain and the play-play behind it, where his heroes and villains act out his clichés. Sinclair uses the device to laugh at commercial theatre and at poverty’s indignities.
