When the great soldier of Burgundy dies in debt, his creditors deny him burial until his son Charalois gives himself up to prison in his place. The old judge Rochfort, moved by such devotion, pays the debts and gives Charalois his daughter Beaumelle in marriage, but her affair with the fop Novall turns gratitude into tragedy. Charles Lacy Lockert’s edition adds introduction, notes and glossary.
A strong Jacobean tragedy written by Massinger with Nathan Field, later reworked by Nicholas Rowe as The Fair Penitent. Download the free EPUB.
