Strindberg wrote this history play at twenty-three, on an island in the Stockholm archipelago, in the summer of 1872. Its hero is Olof, the reformer Olaus Petri, who preaches Luther’s doctrine against the old Church in the Sweden of Gustav Vasa and finds that truth is dangerous to those he loves as well as to himself. Edwin Björkman’s translation includes an introduction on the play’s origins.
