Lob, a strange old host, gathers a party of discontented guests at his country house on Midsummer Eve. Each believes that a different choice in the past would have made a happier life. When a wood appears in the garden where none existed, they wander in and find out who they would have become, among them a failed painter who meets the daughter he never had.
