Lord Augustus Highcastle, a vain and stupid aristocrat, runs a recruiting office in a small English town during the First World War and is certain he is indispensable to the war effort. A clever woman arrives in search of a secret list of anti-aircraft gun positions, and Augustus proves the perfect target. Shaw adds a short preface on the play’s reception among officials.
