Lord Tresham, proud of his ancient name, welcomes the young Earl Mertoun’s suit for his sister Mildred. But Mildred and Mertoun are already secret lovers, and when Tresham learns that a man has been climbing to her chamber at night, his sense of the family honour drives all three toward tragedy in three short acts.
Browning’s verse tragedy, staged by Macready in 1843 and praised by Dickens, shows the poet’s dramatic power in compact form. Download the free EPUB.
