Croce argues that all knowledge begins in intuition, that every true intuition is already an expression, and that art is nothing other than this expressive act, which makes aesthetics and the philosophy of language one science. The first part sets out the theory, separating art from philosophy, history and the practical will; the second surveys the history of aesthetic thought from the Greeks onward.
The first volume of Croce’s Philosophy of the Spirit, in Douglas Ainslie’s translation of the augmented second edition, and a cornerstone of twentieth-century art theory. Download the free EPUB.
