In the Dalarna parish ruled for generations by the Ingmarsson family, a new preacher named Hellgum arrives with a message of perfect brotherhood, and households, marriages and friendships divide over whether to follow him. Young Ingmar must choose between love and the family farm as neighbours prepare to sell everything and leave Sweden for Jerusalem.
