In May 1840 the girls at a fashionable school near Derwentwater whisper about a terrible secret that has come to one of them in a manuscript. Resolving to act on it, she returns to Dalton Hall, where she finds strange inmates, walls closing in around her, and jailers to bargain with, while the headmistress, Miss Plympton, tries in vain to reach her.
