The story begins deep in a coal mine, where a man rows across a black underground pond lit by a single safety lamp among petrified trees. Above ground he is drawn into a conflict with speculators and aristocrats, among them the eccentric Countess Theudelinde, over the wealth buried in Hungary’s coal.
One of the best-known novels by Hungary’s great nineteenth-century storyteller, in an English translation. Download the free EPUB.
