Arranged by the zoological classes and orders of the day, from apes, bats and bears through dogs, wolves, lions and tigers this compendium pairs brief descriptions with anecdotes of animal intelligence and behaviour, such as the mouse drawn out by a violin on a British warship. Goodrich wrote for young readers under his famous pen name Peter Parley.
